Reducer or gear head is added to the motor output to reduce the motor speed and improve the torque. The reducer affects the overall output torque, noise and accuracy of the motor.
Decelerating motor is often used as position control. Typical cases are used as packaging equipment or to grab materials and put them in designated positions. There are also some high-precision manufacturing or filling liquids. The specific requirements of the application will determine the accuracy of the reduction motor. For example, if a box is placed on a pallet by a mechanical arm, a lower precision reduction motor is enough, while a higher precision position control may only allow a few microns of error.
In fact, all kinds of reduction motors can be used as position control, and the requirement of accuracy is the basis for us to choose reduction mechanism.
If the key point for your application is the position accuracy, then you should try to reduce the idle return of the reducer. There are many ways to reduce air return, such as adding preload or using high-precision gear.
The use of high-precision gears requires that the manufacturer's gear dimensions be controlled within a very small working range, so that all gears can be closely matched, and the gap between teeth engagement is relatively small, so as to reduce the empty return. Of course, the price of high-precision gear is much higher than that of ordinary gear.
Another way is to apply a preload on the gear, usually by adding a spring on the mechanical structure to keep the gear teeth tightly engaged, so as to achieve low altitude return. However, this method can only achieve high-precision position control when running in a single direction.
